Patients may have
concerns about the safety of dental x-rays and the need for them in
the dental office. Even though traditional dental x-rays use very
small doses of x-rays, there have been advances in technique where it
is now possible to reduce the amount of radiation by up to 90%. This
is a procedure called "digital x-rays". The Stony Brook Center for
Cosmetic Dentistry uses this technique exclusively to minimize your
x-ray exposure.
Dental x-rays are an
important part of diagnosing your oral health. We can detect invisible
decay or other conditions while they are small and avoid big problems
later. It is advisable to have them taken periodically. If you are in
good dental health, it may be necessary to take x-rays every year or
two.
Even though the
amounts of x-ray radiation are very small, we protect the patient with
a lead apron. This protects you from your neck to mid-thigh.
Reproductive organs are sensitive to x-rays, so we are very careful to
protect those areas when taking dental films.
If a patient is
pregnant, we avoid taking x-rays, unless there is an emergency, in
which case we use double lead shielding.

The infection control
standards and procedures at our office are strictly compliant with all
local, state and federal agencies. The water sterilization system uses
ultraviolet light to completely sterilize all water that we use during
treatment. All reusable
instruments are heat and pressure sterilized after each patient’s
visit. The sterilization system is tested often to make sure that it
is working properly. Many instruments are used only once and then
disposed of.
All staff members attend infection courses regularly and are trained
in the latest techniques to ensure your safety and comfort.
